Politics & Morality: How to Cover Veteran Gun Suicide

Chris Marvin (Moderator) | Michael Diamond | Shannon Klug | Aaron MárquezHilton Chicago, Williford Room

Compared to civilians, military veterans are twice as likely to own guns and three times more likely to die by gun suicide. Guns are 95% fatal in suicide attempts, and three quarters of all veteran suicides are by gun. Yet, many organizations and government entities that study and attempt to address veteran suicide are failing to adequately address the role that guns play. Everytown for Gun Safety – through its Veteran Advisory Council (VAC) – has developed a non-idealogical approach for gun suicide intervention, tailored specifically to veterans and their natural helpers.
Everytown, the nation’s largest gun violence prevention organization, is eager to present two research products at MVJ25 as a way to help journalists be better equipped to talk about veteran suicide by gun. Join members of Everytown's VAC for this panel and get the data and stories you need to better educate the public and policymakers alike on what can be done to stop the veteran gun suicide epidemic.
